Three of twenty pen and ink illustrations commissioned for a forthcoming book on British Bees. The project was instrumental in my mastering of cross-hatching and stippling. This combo features a worker (sterile female) at the top, a queen (large fertile female) in the middle, and a drone (male) at the bottom. Notice how large the eyes of the drone are - his eyesight is seemingly designed to spot queens at distance and chase them at great speed in hope of a romantic encounter. He cannot sting you, but queens and workers pack a powerful punch if you annoy them.
